This word has intrigued me today. The words of a Michael W. Smith song called “Hand of Providence” playing over and over. Here is the chorus:
Oh the Hand of Providence
Is guiding us through choices that we make
Oh the Hand of Providence
Is reaching out to help us on our way.
What is providence exactly? Dictionary.com explains it this way:
1. (often initial capital letter ) the foreseeing care and guidance of god or nature over the creatures of the earth.
2. (initial capital letter ) God, especially when conceived as omnisciently directing the universe and the affairs of humankind with wise benevolence.
3. a manifestation of divine care or direction.
Providence – the divine care of a loving God. What an awesome thought, to know that He has a plan for me. Jeremiah 29:11-13 says, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’”
Wow! He really does have a plan. As a friend pointed out the other day, though, these words were said to the Israelites while they were in exile. It was said to assure His people He was still with them even when they felt forgotten. He does note that this gift of prosperity is contingent upon the people coming back to Him in obedience.
Paul speaks to this point as well. Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
This working of God is also contingent upon us loving Him and answering His call, accepting Him as Savior.
Providence. Does God really have a plan for me? Is He really in control of everything? Why are there contingencies? I do believe He has a plan for us all. I also believe He allows us to choose. Our first step is to believe in, to choose, the Lord Jesus Christ, asking Him to save us.
Our next step is to seek Him. We will take a look at that with some biblical examples next time! If you have not taken care of step one, make sure to do that first. No skipping steps!
Providence – it is a wonderful word.
